About This Site
The story behind the official web home of the Usenet group alt.atheism — who built it, who shaped it, and how it came together.
The digital frontier of religious discourse found a home in the early days of Usenet, where alt.atheism emerged as a gathering place for freethinkers and skeptics. This site preserves that legacy, offering a library of resources and archived discussions that trace the evolution of atheist thought online. What began as text-based exchanges among a connected community has grown into a broader resource for those exploring secular perspectives. The spirit of those early conversations remains alive here, with material that reflects both the serious debates and the lighter moments that defined the group's culture over the years.
The tools available on this site are designed to help visitors navigate a wealth of historical and contemporary content. From the quote of the month to the media manager, each feature serves a purpose in organizing and highlighting the diverse material that has accumulated. The wiki-style structure allows for collaborative contribution, while the sitemap and feeds ensure that nothing important is left buried. Whether one seeks philosophical arguments, community history, or practical resources for engaging with atheist thought, the layout prioritizes clarity and accessibility without sacrificing depth.
A central feature of this archive is the recognition that atheism is not a monolithic position but a spectrum of perspectives connected by common questions. The library gathers writings that span from rigorous philosophical treatises to personal narratives of doubt and discovery. Resources are organized to support both newcomers exploring these ideas for the first time and seasoned participants looking to revisit foundational texts. The emphasis remains on fostering genuine understanding and thoughtful dialogue, honoring the tradition of open inquiry that has always been at the heart of the alt.atheism community.
The maintenance of this site reflects a commitment to preserving digital history while adapting to modern web standards. Over time, content has been migrated, reorganized, and restored to ensure continued access to the conversations that shaped an online movement. The licensing framework encourages sharing and adaptation, allowing the material to reach new audiences beyond its original Usenet context. This ongoing effort is driven by volunteers who recognize the value of keeping these discussions available for future generations of skeptics, seekers, and anyone interested in the rich tapestry of atheist thought.
Origins
The original alt-atheism.org website was created by Don Antropos of Cydragon Creations in November 1997. Don was a regular participant on alt.atheism before the demands of life pulled him away from the newsgroup.
After Don's tenure, Lori Lee Alvarado took over and kept the website alive, maintaining it alongside her own web projects and design work.
Editors & Design
The site has been edited and re-designed by Carl Wilson and J. Wilson. The current design, by L. Raymond, is built on graphic work contributed by ThatWare.
In early 2013, material from the old site was restored and reorganized, bringing key resources back into a coherent structure for the community.
